With few exceptions, all curricula, products, teaching guides, textbooks and modules related to driver education sold in the U.S. are not measured or evaluated.
One view of why this is true pertains to a fear that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing -- in this case the realization that most of these tools do not work or marginally affect the creation of safe teen drivers.
It is also difficult to measure effectiveness quantitatively because there are so many factors involved beyond the classroom, including parents, peer pressure, distractions, and various media.
Drive® for School has been measured qualitatively in numerous states -- more than 20 studies. The results: Young drivers using the program during their driver education classes remember what to do in critical driving situations AND THEN DO IT between 150% and 400% over never using the program!
The studies below are examples of the impact Drive® for School is having on young drivers.
The state of Rhode Island asked Moorshire Group to develop a driver retraining course based on Ownership Learning® and the other Drive® programs. Recidivism rates (repeat traffic offenders) had been averaging close to 10% by those taking the current course, and the courts had been decreasing the number of people sent to it.
It had become clear that a large number of drivers had not changed their "attitude" towards careless or dangerous driving.
After conducting extensive research, Drive® Attitudes was created and tested. It is a 4-hour, hands-on, participatory retraining course attended by traffic offenders ordered to take it by magistrates at the Traffic Tribunal. (See previous page)
Its success has been well-documented. The rate of recidivism has plummeted since Drive® Attitudes replaced the previous retraining course: It continually averages less than 1% ! Attendees evaluate the course and the annually-certified instructor after they take it, and their experiences and comments have been overwhelmingly positive.
Below is a chart showing the rate of recidivism using Drive® Attitudes. It also compares results with the previous course.
